Hyacinth — also spelled jacinth — is a name worth untangling before anything else: it is not a separate gem species. It is a historical name for the orange-to-red color variety of zircon, the same mineral that also occurs colorless, blue, and brown. The name survives mainly in older birthstone lists and antique jewelry descriptions; modern gemology and the modern trade both use “zircon” as the species name and describe color as a modifier (orange zircon, blue zircon) rather than reaching for “hyacinth” at all.
Species and variety. Hyacinth is a color variety of zircon, ZrSiO4, a zirconium silicate that crystallizes in the tetragonal system. Its orange-to-red color comes from trace elements and structural factors within the zircon lattice, distinguishing it from the same species’ colorless, blue, or brown forms — all of which are chemically zircon with different trace chemistry or, in the case of blue zircon, often heat treatment.
A historical point of confusion. Because orange-red zircon and certain garnet varieties can look similar without instrumentation, older sources occasionally used “hyacinth” loosely enough to blur into garnet — a confusion modern refractive-index and specific-gravity testing resolves in seconds, but one that genuinely existed in pre-modern gemological writing and explains why some historical birthstone texts are ambiguous about which stone they mean.
Appearance and color range. Hyacinth/orange-red zircon ranges from a warm amber-orange to a deeper reddish-brown, distinct from the blue zircon more commonly seen in modern jewelry (most of which is heat-treated from brownish rough) and from colorless zircon (sometimes used historically as a diamond substitute for its high refractive index and strong dispersion).
Hardness and everyday care. Zircon’s hardness varies somewhat by color and treatment history, generally falling between 6 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale — moderate durability that calls for a bit more care than corundum or diamond, particularly around sharp knocks, since zircon can be brittle along certain directions despite its respectable hardness number. It is better suited to earrings and pendants than to a ring in daily heavy use.
Where it is found. Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Myanmar are the principal historical and modern sources of gem zircon in the orange-red hyacinth color range.
Birthstone role. Hyacinth appears in the historical (pre-20th-century) monthly list for February, as an alternative alongside amethyst and pearl. None of the three modern systems (US 1912, UK 2013, US current) retain it — all three give February to amethyst alone, and hyacinth’s status as a birthstone today rests entirely on that older, superseded tradition.
