Unlike beryl or corundum, where variety names track color within one species, garnet’s colors often track genuinely different mineral species with different chemistry, not just different trace impurities in the same host.
Hardness and everyday care. Garnet’s hardness varies by species, generally falling between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale — durable enough for regular wear in rings and other jewelry, comparable to quartz, though slightly less hard than topaz or corundum. Cleaning with mild soap and water is safe for most garnet; ultrasonic cleaning is generally fine for clean, untreated stones but worth confirming with a jeweler for included material.
